“I AM DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED” WITH INEC OVER ELECTION POSTPONEMENT- PRESIDENT BUHARI

President Buhari

Following the postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled to hold today, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed ‘deep disappointment’ in electoral body, INEC’s decision.

According to Buhari who had travelled to Daura, Katsina state to participate in the polls, he had given INEC all the support required to conduct the exercise today.

In statement released on Saturday, the President said, “I am deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and our preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement.

Many Nigerians have traveled to various locations to exercise their right to vote, and international observers are gathered. INEC themselves have given assurances, day after day and almost hour after hour that they are in complete readiness for the elections. We and all our citizens believed them.

This administration has ensured that we do not interfere in any way with the work of INEC except to ensure that all funds were released to the commission.

We now urge INEC to ensure not only that materials already distributed are safe and do not get into wrong hands, but that everything is done to avoid the lapses that resulted in this unfortunate postponement, and ensure a free and fair election on the rescheduled dates.

While I reaffirm my strong commitment to the independence, neutrality of the electoral umpire and the sanctity of the electoral process and ballot, I urge all political stakeholders and Nigerians to continue to rally round INEC at this trying national moment in our democratic journey.

I, therefore, appeal to all Nigerians to refrain from all civil disorder and remain peaceful, patriotic and united to ensure that no force or conspiracy derail our democratic development.

I have decided to move back to Abuja to ensure that the 14.00 hrs meeting called by INEC with all stakeholders is successful.

UNKNOWN GUNMEN INVADE APC CANDIDATE’S HOUSE, RAIN BULLETS ON BUILDING, VEHICLES

The House of Representatives candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ika federal constituency, Mr Sebastian Okoh, on Friday, escaped being assassinated when unknown gunmen invaded his residence and riddled the entire place with bullets.

The candidate, while narrating his ordeal, said he was in the house with his family when the bullets started raining down on his building, causing severe damage to windows and vehicles parked in and outside the compound.

The former aide of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who resigned his appointment and joined the APC to vie for the House of Representatives seat, said the attempt to kill him and his household was to put a stop to the liberation agenda.

According to him, the Ika federal constituency’s liberation agenda he is championing was a divine project to provide people-oriented leadership.

While thanking God for saving his life and his family from the war-like invasion that lasted for several minutes, he appealed to his supporters for calm, adding that God had saved and preserved him for a purpose.

Okoh said he had earlier reported to the Agbor Area Command of the Nigerian Police of some suspected movements in the community.

Meanwhile, indigenes of Umunede community, in Ika North East Local Government Area, hometown of Sebastian Okoh, had taken to the streets in wild protest, to express their anger over the attempted assassination of the politician.

But the Agbor Area Police Commander, ACP Cordelia Ikejiani had visited the community and politician’s compound and assured that the Nigerian Police will carry out detailed investigations.

INEC POSTPONES 2019 ELECTIONS BY ONE WEEK

The commission shifted the election by one week, explaining how difficult it was for it to shift the general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who briefed journalists at about 2:43am on Saturday, in Abuja, said the commission had met on Friday, 15th February 2019 and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 General Elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, and therefore, shifted the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.

He said the commission would later in the day be meeting with key stakeholders at the International Conference Centre, Abuja to discuss issues surrounding the development.

According to him, “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible, said Yakubu.

He said, “consequently, the Commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly Elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.

Furthermore, the Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections is rescheduled to Saturday 9th March 2019. This will afford the Commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.

EFCC ARRESTS BABACHIR LAWAL, TO ARRAIGN HIM TODAY FOR FRAUD

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arrested the immediate-past Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.

The former SGF, who was picked up by operatives of the agency, is expected to be arraigned today following a charge of conspiracy and fraud levelled against him by the anti-graft agency.

Lawal will be docked before an FCT High Court in Maitama to be presided over by Justice Jude Okeke.

The EFCC had filed a 10-count charge bordering on conspiracy and fraud against him and Hamidu David Lawal, Suleiman Abubakar and two companies, Rholavision Engineering Ltd and Josmon Technologies Ltd.

In the charge filed on January 30 by Offem Uket for the commission, Lawal was alleged to have conspired with Hamidu, a director in Rholavision and Abubakar, a staff in the same company, to fraudulently acquire a property and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 26(1)(c) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and punishable under Section 12 of the same Act.

One of the charges accused Hamidu, Abubakar and Rholavision to have “abet the award of contract to Rholavision Engineering Ltd for the removal of invasive plant species and simplified irrigation to the tune of N6.4million by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) through the Presidential Initiative for North East (PINE).”

Count 9 of the charge accused Hamidu to have “abet the holding indirectly of a private interest by Engineer Babachir Lawal in the award of a contract to Josmon Technologies Ltd for the removal of invasive plant species and simplified irrigation by OSGF through PINE to the tune of N272.5million.”

Lawal was also accused to have fraudulently acquired a private interest in a contract awarded to Josmon Technologies Ltd.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in October 2017, sacked Lawal following a report of investigations by a panel headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, into allegations of fraud leveled against him.

'MY VISIT TO NIGERIA HAS POTENTIAL TO BE POLITICISED' - BILL CLINTON

~Turns Down National Peace Invite

~Says visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicised

Former United States President Bill Clinton has turned down an invitation by the National Peace Committee to visit Nigeria from February 12 to 13 to deliver a goodwill message at the signing ceremony of the “National Peace Accord in Abuja, hinging his decision on the fact that a visit to Nigeria at this time has the potential to be politicised.

A statement by his Spokesman, Angel Ureña, said former President Clinton however looked towards talking to both candidates and former Head of State General Abdulsami Abubakar this week.

The peace committee had invited Clinton and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Baroness Patricia Scotland, to visit Nigeria from February 12 to 13, ahead of the Nigerian presidential election. Both were billed to deliver goodwill messages at the signing ceremony of the “National Peace Accord” on 13 February.

A statement made available to newsmen on Monday by the spokesman of the former US president said: “President Clinton appreciates General Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Nigerian National Peace Committee’s invitation to travel to Nigeria.

He is incredibly supportive and respectful of the Committee’s efforts, of the election process, and of the work being done to try to ensure a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent outcome. This is a crucial time in Nigeria, and President Clinton is hopeful that the election’s outcome reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

“Over the course of the last several days, and after various conversations with the different stakeholders, it’s become apparent that President Clinton’s visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicized in a way that is not in line with the goals of the Committee. Therefore, he will not be traveling to Abuja. “He looks forward to both candidates and General Abubakar this week.”

More trouble for the Adams Oshiomhole led All Progressives Congress ( APC) as a Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River state has sacked the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Senator John Owan-Enoh and other candidates of the party currently recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Hon Justice Simon Amobeda in a two-hour judgment he delivered ordered that “INEC should only receive and accept the names and candidates for the 2019 elections that emerged from the lawful executive led by Godwin Etim John.”

The court also sacked the leadership of the party led by Mr. John Ochalla.

Justice Amodeba also ordered that persons parading themselves as the executive members of the APC in Cross River State should forthwith cease and that the lawful executive of APC in Cross River State is the one led by Godwin Etim John.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the judgement, counsel to the claimants, Ayei Okpa said, “The judgment clearly is in support of the rule of law, as it also supports the yearning of the common man.

“INEC is to use and publish only the names that emerged from the lawful executive and not any other name that emerged from any other executive in Cross River State APC.”
