IBB CONGRATULATES BUHARI, SETS AGENDA FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida has congratulated President Buhari over his re-election to lead the nation for the next four years.

In a statement signed by his and made available to Journalists in Minna, Babangida said the President should confront with renewed vigour the most urgent problem confronting Nigeria.

He stated that the insecurity of lives and property is one of the most urgent problem confronting the nation as the Boko Haram insurgency remains a threat to many Nigerians particularly in the North East sub region adding that kidnapping and armed banditry remain a national menace.

“Now that the President has won his re-election bid, he should confront with renewed vigour the most urgent problem confronting Nigeria: ‘insecurity of lives and property’.

“The Boko Haram insurgency remains a threat to many Nigerians particularly in the North East sub region, whiles the twin evils of kidnapping and armed robbery/armed banditry remain a major national menace. The president must pay priority attention to these security issues”, the statement read.

The Elder statesman further averred that the economy of the country must also occupy the president’s urgent attention.

“There is the need to be more creative in formulating policies that will improve the nation’s economy, create employment opportunities and give hope to our teaming youths.

He also urged the President wish to heed to the yearnings of reasonable Nigerians for restructuring and seek all constitutional means to devolve some powers presently exercised by the Federal Government to the other tiers of government.

Commenting on the outcome of the elections, Babangida called on the President to resist the temptation to see his co-contestants as enemies along him to work at healing the wounds of campaign exchanges.

“The newly elected president should heal the wounds of the heated campaign exchanges by embracing those who contested alongside with him. The President must resist the temptation to see them as enemies; not even opponents, but fellow compatriots who merely disagreed with him on how best to move our country forward.”

He expressed his admiration of the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his doggedness urging him to work with President Buhari to move the country forward.

“I was particularly impressed with the gallant and audacious spirit of the main challenger in the presidential race, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar GCON.

“I was not surprised that even though he lost the most exotic position of the land, his doggedness and pattern of support cut across ethnic, religious and regional lines that earned him the second position of the last Presidential election.

“I call on the former Vice –President Atiku Abubakar to close ranks and work with the winner of the election in an objective and constructive manner so that democracy will continue to thrive in our country at this crucial period of renaissance.”

DON’T PUSH HERDSMEN INTO BLOODLETTING IN IGBOLAND - MIYETTI ALLAH

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has warned farmers and youths in local communities across the south east against attacks and killing of Fulani herdsmen and their cows.  

The chairman of MACBAN in Anambra, Alhaji Sadiq Gidado who fired the warning shot in an exclusive interview with the Orient Weekend while reacting to the recent farmers/herders’ crisis in Anambra West local government area of Anambra state, stressed that its members would not withstand further unprovoked killings in their line of duty.

“The Fulanis are not people you can push to the wall. I know how I am managing these herdsmen and I pray that the kind of killings that is taking place in other parts of the country will not happen in South East. They should stop confronting and killing these Fulanis without reason. There is a level it would reach and I may not be able to control them anymore.

This paper earlier reported that tension rose last weekend in Mmiata Anam community following speculations that heavily armed herdsmen arrived the area to carry out reprisal attacks following a recent clash involving farmers and herders. 

But Gidado traced the latest conflict to the killing of four herdsmen in the area between since the beginning of the year without tangible evidence of destruction of crops. "The genesis of this current clash was that on January 2, 2019, two Fulani herdsmen were killed at Mmiata Anam and nobody knows what really led to that, except that it was alleged that somebody was wounded inside a farm in the area and youths in the area mobilised themselves and went on rampage.

“Three people were arrested in respect of that matter and we thought everything was under control. But again, on February 22, the traditional ruler of the community called me and informed me that a farmer was killed in the area and they were suspecting Fulani herdsmen for the crime. And I quickly assured him that if Fulani people were behind it, I would get them arrested to face justice. But residents of the area mobilised themselves and killed two Fulani. Up till now, the corpse of the two Fulani are nowhere to be found.

The MACABAN leader further disclosed that the recent land tussle between the Igbo-speaking and Igala-speaking communities in the area was also fuelling the crisis. “Actually, it’s not only Fulani herdsmen and farmers clashes that we are witnessing in Anambra West. There is equally the land dispute between the Igbo-speaking and Igala-speaking communities in the area which is creating a sort of confusion.

According to him, there was usually no proper investigation to ascertain whether it was a Fulani man or Igala that wounded the farmer and what they did was that they went and killed Fulani people. “To me, that was wrong because if Fulani are fighting, you can never kill them like that. The truth is that I know the way I control my people, especially those operating in Anambra West, to ensure that there is peace. I try to tell them to avoid getting into trouble and even when some people are trying to confront them, they should just leave the area and that’s what they are doing.

Gidado disclosed that MACABAN was working in synergy with the security operatives, the indigenes and the state government through the Cattle Menace Control Committee and that those whose farms were damaged by cattle should channel their complaints through the body rather than resorting to violent attacks on its members. “To ensure that they operate peacefully, I ordered that nobody should carry weapons. If they were armed, they would not be easily killed like that. And that is because we have a properly constituted peace committee in Anambra West and another committee in Awka that investigates and addresses issues relating to farmers/herdsmen conflicts.

“So far, none of the committees has received reports from these communities that their farms or crops were destroyed by Fulani herdsmen. But, even if farms were destroyed, I believe we have to follow it legally and not through bloodshed. So, I condemn this act and I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the people of these communities to approach this matter legally.

Meanwhile, efforts to get the official response of the Anambra state police command on the matter was not successful as messages sent to the state public relations officer, Haruna Mohammed, were not replied as at press time.

GOV. TAMBUWAL BREAKS SILENCE ON ATIKU’S DEFEAT, REPORTS PRESIDENT BUHARI TO THE US GOVT

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has appealed to the United States Government to intervene in the prevention of alleged harassment of electorate in Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections.

Tambuwal made the appeal on Thursday when he received the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington, in Sokoto.

He told Symington that the just-concluded Presidential and National Assembly Elections witnessed harassment of leaders and loyalists of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to him, many PDP members were hounded and arrested by security agents on the election day.

“Our appeal is to ensure the electorate in whatever political parties are not intimidated or terrorised.

”Because our people were intimidated to the extent of failing to discharge their civic duties in the remaining elections, scheduled for March 9.

“As such, I want to appeal to the US Envoy to call on the Nigerian government to allow the will of the people to be granted during the forthcoming Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

“The opposition has engaged in post-election violence, with attacks on citizens and razing many properties and houses within and outside the metropolis in the state, in a show of terror against perceived opponents and non-partisan members of the public,” he said.

He thanked the envoy for the visit, describing such as important for the peace and development of democracy in the state.

Earlier, Symington said that he was in Sokoto to encourage more peaceful atmosphere throughout the electioneering period and beyond.

“There is no any development that can come without peace, so I appeal on all stakeholders and the good people of Sokoto to ensure peaceful polls,” he said.

HUGE RELIEF AS NOUN GEARS TO MOBILISE GRADUATES FOR NYSC, LAW SCHOOL

The newly-amended act governing the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has removed the barrier  hindering its graduates from participating in the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) and Nigeria Law School.

 The amended Act which was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 1, 2018, and was gazetted recently is titled “National Open University (Amendment) Act, 2018.”

The Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof Abdalla Adamu, who disclosed this on Thursday during the 54the meeting of the Governing Council in Lagos, said the amendment of the act now empowers the management of the university to mobilise its graduates for NYSC and the Nigerian Law School.

Prof Abdalla Adamu said with the gazetting of the amended act, the university management would approach NYSC and Council of Legal Education for negotiation on the two issues.

‘’Initially, what was missing is negotiation with the two bodies. We have made contact and with the amended act, negotiation with NYSC and Council on Legal Education will soon start,’’ he stated.

The VC also disclosed that NOUN would matriculate over 17, 000 students nationwide and used the opportunity to clear the air on the status of its admission via the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The Chairman, Governing Council of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof Peter Okebukola, during the briefing hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the NOUN amended Act into law on December 1, 2018.

Prof Okebukola said the amended act would provide legitimacy to the university as a full-time open and distance learning institution and with a population of 516,000 students, its target is to hit the one million mark in no distance future.

His words: “The Council of NOUN extended its gratitude to the Federal government, under the leadership of President Muhammad Buhari for signing the NOUN Amendment Act which has recently been gazetted and published on 3rd December 2018, as National Open University (Amendment) Act, 2018.

‘’With this recognition, NOUN is placed at par with all recognised universities in Nigeria under the various acts that amended the provision of higher education in Nigerian universities. This further strengthens the university to provide open and distance learning opportunities to millions of Nigerians who otherwise would not have been given such opportunities in ‘closed’ universities due to one difficult circumstance or other.”

According to him, the council also lauded the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on the success achieved in the implementation of the 2016-2019 Ministerial Strategic Plan especially relating to the pillar of access.

Okebukola disclosed that in the last two years, NOUN had significantly increased enrolment and on the march to attaining the one-million enrolment target by 2023 as provided in the 2019-2023 Revitalisation Agenda for the Nigerian University System developed by NUC under Prof Abubakar, Adamu Rasheed as executive secretary.

He stated that the council endorsed the plan to improve the quality of NOUN graduates to be the best in Africa in programmes to be selected in phases so that all programmes are covered in the quality-enhancement drive by 2025.

Prof Okebukola said the council approved March 22 and 23 for the 2019 convocation activities for graduating over 18,000 students.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR TABLES 6-POINT DEMANDS TO PRESIDENT BUHARI

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in last week’s election, Alh. Atiku Abubakar has presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government.

Top on the demand was unfreezing of opposition politicians’ bank accounts.

Another major demand presented to the former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, (NPC) Geneneral Abdulsalam Abubakar (rtd) was demilitarisarion of subsequent polls.

Gen. Abubakar led members of the committee to a meeting with Atiku and his running mate, Mr. Peter Obi in Abuja yesterday night.

The NPC is expected to meet President Muhammadu Buhari government with the demands .

Other demands by Atiku were:

* That accreditation of voters should take place before voting in subsequent elections.

* That there should be no deployment of the military in subsequent elections.

* That INEC should open its back end server to all participating parties.

* That there should be a release of all politicians detained illegally by FG.

A source at the meeting disclosed that Atiku “warned that tensions are building up in the land.”

NPC team included Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Bishop Kukah and Rev. Fr Atta Barkindo.

Atiku and his team informed the group that the election of Feb 23 was the worst in 20 years  since the country returned to democratic rule. and that  it was marked by brazen rigging with no consideration to the will of the people.

They listed the following as issues they had with the Presidential polls:

* Deployment of the military was unconstitutional and in breach of Supreme Court judgement.

* That resultantly, a lot of malpractices between the INEC officers, the ruling party and the military took place to undermine the votes/voters of the PDP.

* That there was collaboration between INEC and FG to undermine the sanctity of the votes of the people.

* That this is the worst election in 20 years. No improvement from 2015.

It was learnt that Gen. Abdusalam and his team pleaded with the PDP flag bearer to avoid anything that could jeopardise the nation’s peaceful co-existence.

PLATEAU NLC CHAIRMAN RESIGNS, JOIN’S GOVERNOR’S CABINET

The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Plateau state Council, Jibrin Banchir, on Wednesday resigned his position as the chairman of the labour movement.

Mr Banchir, who announced his resignation at an emergency State Execute Council (SEC) meeting of NLC in Jos, also told the union leaders that he had been appointed as Special Adviser to Governor Simon Lalong on Labour Matters.

The outgone chairman, who had served in that capacity for eight years, handed to Yarlings Gumshing, immediate past chairman of NUT, to act as chairman until April when a substantive chairman would be elected.

He appreciated workers for giving him the opportunity to serve.

“Whatever I am today and the uncommon experience I have garnered is because of NLC.

“I have fond memories of the time and there were also turbulent times as well.

“There are times we could not sleep in our houses because of threats to our lives. There are times we slept in the secretariat in spite of the risks involved in fighting workers.

“Our families also had sleepless nights over threats.’’

Mr Banchir appreciated God for his protection and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died for the cause.

He charged the labour movement in the state to remain united if it must achieve its goal of fighting for workers welfare.

According to him, the labour movement is being endangered by corporate governance and that only unity can promote its relevance.

“As I am leaving, I want to passionately appeal that we remain united.

“We must be honest and sincere in the discharge of our responsibilities.

“Our actions and inactions will determine the wellbeing or otherwise of those who cannot take care of themselves,” he added.

He appealed to the labour leaders to vote for Mr Lalong, who according to him has a soft spot for workers.

Mr Gumshing in his response congratulated Mr Banchir on his appointment and for successfully serving the body.

“Now that you are there, our relationship with government will wax stronger.

“We will give you the maximum cooperation you need to succeed in your new appointment.’’
